Living Conditions
Living conditions were not nice or even average.
To begin with, rooms were usually very crowded. Auschwitz rooms were designed to hold up to 700 prisoners, but typically held approximately 1,200. It was so crowded that prisoners had to sleep on their sides in rows. The only furniture in each block was wooden wardrobes, stools, and tables.
As for sanitation it was not very advanced and/or modern. There were no sinks or toilets until around the year of 1944. That being said, prisoners had to relieve themselves in outside latrines. Also, since it was so crowded in an individual block, prisoners did not really have enough time to wash.
Lastly, during this time there was no electricity or air conditioning. In the winter, coal-fired stoves provided heating.
